Trucks with additional tanks face taxes for excess amount of imported fuel.
2010-05-27 15:27:00

Truckers carrying cheaper Russian and Belorussian fuel in additional fuel tanks will face new taxes. Since the beginning of this year the Lithuanian Customs Department has access to the manufacturers’ databases which allow checking the amount of fuel that the stock tank can carry in any particular vehicle, and tax the excess. Previously, there were no possibilities to check whether a tank complies with manufacturers’ standards. The agreement between the Customs Department and truck manufacturers has resulted in over 70,000 LTL of additional taxes collected since the start of the year.

According to the deputy of the Lithuanian Customs Department, Jonas Miškinis, import of additional fuel is a frequent activity, thus this fuel must be taxes by duty, excise and Value Added Tax (VAT). Mr. Miškinis also stated that due to a wide variety of trucks and equipment options, such inspection causes additional headache to customs officers.

The European Union (EU) regulations state that citizens can import a full tank and an additional 10 liter tank of foreign fuel, but possess no right to distribute it to other people.

Currently the VAT in Lithuania is 21%, and fuel excise taxes are 434 EUR/1000 l of gasoline and 274 EUR/1000 l of diesel.
